July 2015 – Youth Orchestra Salinas

Month: July 2015

In June and July, students from the orchestra, for the third consecutive summer, had the wonderful opportunity of camping at the Glen Deven Ranch, a part of the Big Sur Land Trust. Boys and girls, twelve years and older, stayed at the ranch for three days and two nights, in order to experience music and nature in a whole new way. There they were challenged to personally connect with the environment and translate their feelings and emotions into their very own music. By the end of the three days, students brought their ideas together to create a camp song that expressed their time on the ranch.

After arriving at the ranch and setting up their tents, the girls were each given a journal in which they were asked to write their own music, poems, and stories. Whether it was a majestic view of the ocean or our descent into a lush valley, there was no lack of inspiration for the students. They were also given many opportunities to work on their own music with the guest counselor Edwin Huizinga. The students were encouraged to create whatever music felt right to them whether it was a simple melody or a complicated pattern. No matter the abilities of the student, each student was set for success and all were able to enjoy making music surrounded by the serene beauty of Glen Deven Ranch.

One memorable moment from camp was a drum circle that was assembled on a point overlooking the ocean. There the students, teachers, and staff drummed together and shared their hopes and dreams with ocean waves and the setting sun as a backdrop. It was refreshing to see the students let go and yell out to the ocean. For many of these young people, having the opportunity to express their true hopes and dreams without fear of judgment or limitations was thrilling. At the ranch, anything seemed possible. It is truly a magical place.

A big Thank you to the Big Sur Land Trust for making such a wonderful opportunity available to our Yosal Kids.
